Exercise A while ago I posted a whole webpage about exercise. I wanted to start some discussion about what we do to get and stay in shape. Oh well, no one wanted to discuss it. So, I'll put some thoughts down and maybe some of you will respond so we can discuss it, maybe on a chat. I realized, about 15 or more years ago, that I needed to get and stay in shape if I wanted to remain playing drums. The reasoning was that I knew lifting drums and cases required some strength and agility. And, as a working drummer here in LA, I had to lift and carry my drums around to gigs and sessions. So, I began going to a Nautlius gym. This was in about 1978 or so. Hmmmm....that's 21 years ago, almost 22! Wow!! That was the beginning of what now is a very positive habit. Watching people working out at the gym, I kind of developed a "program" of sorts. It seemed to work. Then I bought a book by Dr. Ellington Darden, I believe it's called The Nautilus Book. This book opened my eyes up to concepts such as cardiovascular exercise, weight training, etc. It also taught me about form, regarding proper exercise techniques. About 5 years ago, while touring in the Boston area, I met a drummer who was also interested in working out. He introduced me to a program that had helped him immensely. This program was developed by a famous exercise physiologist, to maximize the time you spend in the gym, and to develop results. It's very basic, and it works, for weight loss, strength training, and, if you want, developing size. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, nor an exercise physiologist. This program works for me. It's a 3 month, revolving program. Month
One : Cardiovascular Training. This training can involve aerobics,
weight training with light weights, lots of reps. The goal is to maintain
your heart rate at 70% of your maximum heart rate Month Two: Strength Training. Use weights that allow you to lift 10 repetitions per set, with the last two being difficult. Month Three: Size Training. Use weights that allow you to lift 5 repetitions per set, with the last two being difficult. Repeat. This method has worked for me, when I stick to it. When I am on the road, especially in countries where thre are not a lot of good gyms, it's difficult to stick to it. Recently, in South America, I didn't have a lot of opps to work out. Consequently, I gained weight, (The food is too good there!!) Of course, eating right is paramount in any exercise program. That's the difficult part for me! I can expound on this program, if anyone is interested. Maybe we can start a separate page about exercise. Anyone game?? Do you have any drumming and/or musical subject you'd like to know more about? Please write to me and I'll do my best to address your requests!
