OBJECTIVES
To raise the values and supremacy of the "Cuban School of Percussion," its historical and social influence in Cuba, as well as its international importance.
To promote the creativity of present and future Cuban percusionists for the conservation of this world-wide popularity that we enjoy today, given to us by the sacrifice and effort of previous generations of which Guillermo Barreto, like others, is a faithful exponent.

SYNOPSIS

The National Center of Popular Music, for the third consecutive year, has organized the Havana Drum Festival. As in previous years, the Festival is dedicated to the great Guillermo Barreto. The Festival is also dedicated to wonderful Cuban musicians like Chano Pozo and Mercedita Valdés.

Program of Activities:

* Percussion Contest: The objective of the contest is to stimulate and to show the creative level of the instrumentalists, as well as to reaffirm the high level of Cuban percussion, as much of the young players as those who have come before them. The contest will take place in the America Theater.
Any and all interested percusionistas will participate.
The Organizing Committee of the event will decide the which percussionists will compete.
The winners will be awarded and will perform as part of the Festival.

* El Gran Tambor: Festival Grand Opening.

In this great drum event, the most well known figures in Cuban percussion will participate, along with the famous specialist of the Yoruba tradition, Rogelio Martinez Furé.

* Tribute to Chano Pozo: In the barrio where Chano resided, the possible most authentic violin (Cuban folkloric tradition) will be organized. Mmusicians and friends who knew Chano will be invited in order to enrich the presentation with their experiences.

* Master Classes: Prestigious teachers of Cuban percussion, like Jose Luis Quintana (Changuito), Arístides Soto (Tata Guines), and Giraldo Piloto, will share their knowledge and experiences with guests of the Festival.

The most representative rumba groups of Cuba will appear.
