Updated 25 June 1999

Thanks for visiting my lessons page. I've been so busy performing and teaching in Europe, and then doing a lot of the same here in the States. It's been difficult to keep up with the updates. I hope to be able to update regularly, when I'm home here in LA.

In honor of this month's new lesson, Make It Funky by James Brown, we're having a web special. The Funkmasters book is on special for 24.95$US.

I would like to subtly remind all of you who visit my online lessons that a lot of the concepts taught here can be learned more intensely from my books. You can check my books out at my Books site. The books can be ordered right from my website. How nice! I'll be updating that page soon, with more music and audio.

I've placed a Previous Lessons archive here. Enjoy!

Video Lessons

are also available. I really enjoy teaching by video tape. I can take my time, when I've got the time!, and focus on the grooves that you want. Please email me for info about this and audio lessons by cassette.

Audio Lessons

I've had some good success teaching drummers by audio cassette. Once again, if I can be of any help, please write.

Private Lessons

I live in Southern California and am very happy to be able to teach here at my home studio. My students and I are a nice family, the atmosphere's cool, and we play and learn together. See you here if possible!

Make It Funky - James Brown

This has got to be one of the fonkiest tunes on the planet. And I want to mkae a suggestion to you. Find this recording and ingest it! OK, OK, it may look easy. But check out Jab'o Starks' playing. It's so laid back and groovin', it 'bout to scares me to death!

Listen, check out the way this tune goes from the verse to the bridge. This is the real stuff here. The groove is so deep...man, you just gotta check it out!

I had a great experience just the other day, in a class I teach at the Musicians Institute here in LA. I teach a class, along with bass instructor Alexis Sklarevsky. The class is called "James Brown 101"! I wanted the drummers to feel how it feels to play bass with a drummer. The bass part for this tune is relatively simple, so one of my drum students played bass and a bass student played drums. It was an awesome experience for both guys. So, maybe you can try this with your bassist!

Here's the drum groove, broken down into "Basic" (the lesson) and "Original Verse Grooves". Please, find this tune and play along with it. Try and cop Jab's slinky, down home, "grits and gravy" feel.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Groove this groove 'til it hurts! Find a bassist and really get into this pocket. Then exchange instruments!! What an experiment!

Thanks once again for visiting my lessons page, and for checking out the website. If I can be of any help to you, please drop me an email. And don't forget to check out the books, CDs, and videos available here. Thanks!
