Organizing There's a lot going on in each of our lives. Some of us are full time students. Some of us have full time jobs. Others work at home. Full time drummers, part time drummers, hobbyists, with and without families, it can run the gamut. We all have a lot going on. So, how do we oraganize our time to make the most of what we have, an average of 16 hours in the day? I use a method I learned from a very wise man, Dr. David Viscott. He caled it the Action Board. I have a Dry Erase bulletin board in my office which has on it the important things which are taking up my time at the moment. (As I turn around, I see...Website, Cuba Trip, Books, and Europe.) Under each heading are important notes and dates. It's done in different colors, denoting importance. (darn, there's a lot of red there!) In this way I can keep up with some of the important things in my life. Of course I use a date book, just a basic "Day Minder" month version, which has space for notes for each day's events, meetings, etc. This helps as well. The Action Board helps me the most because I see it every morning when I come in the office. It helps me to organize my thoughts as to what I should be doing regarding taking care of business. I have written, in an earlier Pro Tips, about how I organize my practice regimen. I used to write down everything I practice. This was when I was spending 4-6 hours a day practicing. I can't do that anymore. I do follow my practice of organizing my practice schedule into three basic sections, whatever three things I am working on. This helps me to make the most of my time. Do you have any drumming and/or musical subject you'd like to know more about? Please write to me and I'll do my best to address your requests!
